Moleskin Fabric Guide
Moleskin is a densely woven cotton fabric with a short, softly brushed surface. The name refers to its smooth feel; it is not made from animal skin.
How moleskin is made
A strong cotton base cloth is woven tightly and then brushed or sheared to create a compact nap. The result feels soft but remains substantial and resistant to everyday abrasion.
Why choose moleskin trousers?
- Warmth: the dense weave and brushed face are comfortable in autumn and winter.
- Durability: moleskin has long been associated with workwear and country clothing.
- Comfort: the soft surface and broken-in feel suit long days outdoors or travelling.
- Smart-casual appearance: it pairs well with checked shirts, knitwear, tweed jackets and leather boots.

Styling
Olive, fawn, stone and brown moleskins are natural partners for country checks and tweed. Dark navy or charcoal versions can be worn more smartly with a shirt, wool jumper and brogues.
Care
Turn trousers inside out before washing, use the temperature on the label and avoid aggressive tumble-drying. Brushing and wear can alter the direction of the nap, creating temporary light and dark patches that are part of the fabric’s character.
