Leather & Suede Guide

Leather & Suede Guide

Leather and suede are natural materials made from animal hides. The tanning and finishing process determines their appearance, softness, strength and resistance to wear.

Leather

Smooth leather is widely used for boots, shoes, belts, wallets and bags. Full-grain and high-quality corrected leathers can age attractively when cleaned, conditioned and polished. Read the Leather Material Guide.

Suede

Suede has a softly brushed surface created from the underside or split of a hide. It has a relaxed appearance and is used for boots, slippers and casual footwear, but it needs protection from heavy rain and staining. Read the Suede Material Guide.

Care

Use products intended for the specific finish. Smooth leather generally benefits from conditioning and polish; suede should be brushed and treated with a suitable protector. See the R.M. Williams Leather Care Information.
