Waxed cotton and modern waterproof jackets solve related problems in different ways. Waxed clothing prioritises durability, repairability and traditional style. Technical waterproofs are designed for stronger rain protection, lower weight and moisture-vapour transfer during activity.
How waxed cotton works
A tightly woven cotton cloth is treated with wax, reducing the ease with which water passes through it. The finish handles light rain and everyday country weather well, but traditional waxed cotton is not as breathable as a good technical shell and should not be treated as identical to a seam-sealed waterproof.

How technical waterproofs work

When a waterproof is better
Choose a technical shell for prolonged heavy rain, hill walking, travel where low weight matters or activities that generate more heat. Check waterproof ratings, hood adjustment, pocket placement and ventilation rather than relying on the word waterproof alone.
Care
Traditional wax jackets should usually be wiped with cool water rather than machine washed. Reproof when dry patches appear or water begins to soak into the cloth. Technical jackets should be washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions using suitable products; ordinary fabric conditioner can damage performance.
