What Are Plus Fours?

Plus Fours are traditional country trousers that finish below the knee, usually worn with long socks. They are closely associated with field sports, estate wear and traditional Scottish countrywear.
The name refers to the extra length below the knee, giving freedom of movement and allowing the garment to blouse neatly over the stocking. They remain practical in the field and are also chosen for country weddings and sporting events.
When Plus Fours Are Worn
- Field sports: Traditional, practical and suitable for rough ground.
- Country weddings: Often worn as part of a tweed outfit.
- Sporting events: A classic choice where country dress is appropriate.
Livingston Advice
Plus Fours should look traditional rather than theatrical. Cloth, fit and proportion matter. At Livingston, Plus Fours are one of the core garments offered through our Made to Measure service.
