Gurteen – British Heritage Tailoring for the Everyday Gentleman

Gurteen – Tailored menswear rooted in tradition, built for modern comfort

With over 230 years of history behind it, Gurteen is a name that quietly carries the legacy of British tailoring. Based in Haverhill, Suffolk, the company has been in the hands of the same family since 1784. While other brands come and go with changing trends, Gurteen has stayed true to its values – quality craftsmanship, reliable fits, and clothing that’s made to be worn and enjoyed, not just admired.

At Livingston, we stock Gurteen for customers who appreciate well-made menswear with a relaxed yet polished style – perfect for country weekends, smart-casual events, or simply looking properly turned out without being overdressed.

The Gurteen Story

Gurteen began life as a small clothing manufacturer in the late 18th century and steadily grew into a respected name in British menswear. By the Victorian era, Gurteen was producing ready-to-wear garments, and over the 20th century, it became a fixture in quality independent shops across the UK.

To this day, the business remains family-owned, run by the seventh generation of the Gurteen family. The factory in Suffolk still forms the heart of the brand’s operations – a rarity in an industry that has largely shifted production overseas. That heritage brings with it a level of consistency and care that’s hard to match.

Our Gurteen Range

We stock a changing seasonal selection of Gurteen menswear, mainly focusing on jackets, trousers, shirts, and waistcoats. Each piece combines classic British styling with comfortable fits and easy-care fabrics, making them a favourite for customers who want to look smart without effort.

Jackets

Gurteen is best known for its casual blazers and country jackets – think soft tweeds, brushed wools, and textured blends in timeless checks and herringbones.

Typical features include:

  • Elbow patches on some country styles

  • Contrast linings and subtle finishing details

  • Practical pockets, including inside zip ones

They’re jackets that wear well with everything from smart trousers to dark denim.

Trousers

Gurteen trousers are a big hit with our regulars, particularly those looking for comfort, durability, and a decent cut.

Popular styles include:

  • Wool blend dress trousers – ideal for formal or office wear, with a classic rise and unfinished hem for tailoring

  • Casual chinos – soft cotton twills with a bit of stretch for comfort

  • Corduroy trousers – a perennial country favourite, especially in autumnal shades like mole, rust, and bottle green

Most styles come in a regular or slightly tailored fit – never skinny, but not overly wide either – striking the balance many gents prefer.

Gurteen also offers some clever details:

  • Flex waistbands on selected trousers for added comfort

  • Lined fronts for warmth and smoother wear

  • Adjustable side tabs on more formal styles

Shirts

While Gurteen isn’t primarily a shirtmaker, they do offer a neat selection of casual and country shirts, often in brushed cottons, flannels, or classic poplins.

Expect:

  • Tattersall and checks

  • Warm seasonal palettes

  • Button-down or spread collars

  • A comfortable regular fit

They pair nicely with Gurteen jackets or can be worn with jeans and a gilet for a casual look.

Waistcoats

We occasionally stock Gurteen waistcoats as standalone pieces or to match selected jackets. These are ideal for layering in cooler weather or for adding a bit of formality without wearing a full suit. Think tweeds, textured herringbones, or moleskin cloths with neat button closures and back adjusters.

Fit and Sizing

Gurteen clothing tends to be generously cut but not baggy – ideal for layering or for those who prefer a classic British silhouette. Trousers typically come in a standard rise with options in short, regular, and long leg lengths. Jackets are sized by chest (in inches) and available in short, regular and long fits depending on the style.

We stock sizes from 38” to 50” chest and 32” to 44” waist, though availability varies by season.

How to Wear Gurteen

Gurteen is ideal for men who want to look put-together without fuss. Their pieces sit naturally with other countrywear favourites – Barbour, Schoffel, Viyella, etc.

Some simple styling combinations:

  • Weekend smart: A Gurteen check sports jacket over a roll neck or brushed cotton shirt, with cords or chinos and brogues

  • Country casual: Tattersall shirt and tweed waistcoat with jeans and Chelsea boots

  • Smart office wear: Wool blend Gurteen trousers with a crisp shirt and blazer, polished up with a pair of Loakes or Ambitious dress sneakers.

It’s very mix-and-match friendly – great for building a versatile wardrobe without having to rethink your whole style.

Why Our Customers Come Back for Gurteen

Many of our customers say the same things when they try Gurteen:

  • “It just fits properly.”

  • “Nice to find something smart that’s not too tight.”

  • “Feels well made – like it’ll last.”

It’s a brand that appeals to those who like understated quality. No big logos, no unnecessary frills – just proper clothes, done right. And for many, especially those used to inconsistent sizing from high street brands, Gurteen feels refreshingly dependable.

The value is also excellent – especially given the British roots, the durability of the cloths, and the comfort of the cut.
