Viyella: Timeless Elegance and Rich History in Fashion and Fabrics

Viyella, established in 1893 in England, revolutionized the textile industry as the world’s first branded fabric. Originally a blend of 55% merino wool and 45% cotton, Viyella's unique twill weave offered a soft, lightweight, and shrink-resistant fabric. Its versatility, warmth, and durability made it popular across a range of garments, from shirts and dresses to nightgowns and children's clothing. The fabric quickly became synonymous with practical elegance and was a favorite for military uniforms during World War II, and later for "vintage" styles embraced by designers like Laura Ashley.

Beyond fabric, Viyella expanded into a complete fashion brand, producing clothing and home furnishings with timeless appeal. Though the original wool-cotton blend is no longer available, Viyella continues to be recognized for its craftsmanship and heritage in fine fabrics.

The Viyella brand evolved through significant milestones, including mergers and expansion under Viyella International and later Coats Viyella. Today, Viyella represents a blend of classic style and modern sophistication, maintaining its legacy in the world of fashion and home textiles. With a flagship store in London’s prestigious Regent Street, Viyella remains a symbol of British quality and timeless fashion.
